September 9 - Saint Peter Claver
Luke 6:27-38:
Jesus said to his disciples:
"To you who hear I say, love your enemies,
do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you,
pray for those who mistreat you.
To the person who strikes you on one cheek,
offer the other one as well,
and from the person who takes your cloak,
do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks of you,
and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
For if you love those who love you,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners do the same.
If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners lend to sinners,
and get back the same amount.
But rather, love your enemies and do good to them,
and lend expecting nothing back;
then your reward will be great
and you will be children of the Most High,
for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be merciful, just as also your Father is merciful.
"Stop judging and you will not be judged.
Stop condemning and you will not be condemned.
Forgive and you will be forgiven.
Give and gifts will be given to you;
a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing,
will be poured into your lap.
For the measure with which you measure
will in return be measured out to you."
On this Feast of St. Peter Claver, who served in the missions of Africa
and called himself the “slave of the slaves forever,” I realize
that injustice still resides in our world. As the Gospel tells me, I can
fight injustice with love. Give to me that Love today, Jesus your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and
ever.

Luke 6:39-42:
Jesus told his disciples a parable:
"Can a blind person guide a blind person?
Will not both fall into a pit?
No disciple is superior to the teacher;
but when fully trained,
every disciple will be like his teacher.
Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye,
but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?
How can you say to your brother,
‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,'
when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye?
You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first;
then you will see clearly
to remove the splinter in your brother's eye."
Father,
As I begin this day of work, help me to be forgiving and/or charitable
toward those with whom I work. Christ says in today’s Gospel not
to be quick to judge others without looking first at my own faults. Give
me the courage to be patient with my co-workers.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

September 11- Remembering the
National Tragedy
Luke 6:43-49:
Jesus said to his disciples:
"A good tree does not bear rotten fruit,
nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.
For every tree is known by its own fruit.
For people do not pick figs from thornbushes,
nor do they gather grapes from brambles.
A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good,
but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil;
for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.
"Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,' but not
do what I command?
I will show you what someone is like who comes to me,
listens to my words, and acts on them.
That one is like a man building a house,
who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock;
when the flood came, the river burst against that house
but could not shake it because it had been well built.
But the one who listens and does not act
is like a person who built a house on the ground
without a foundation.
When the river burst against it,
it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed."
Father, I remember the tragic event of 9/11 and I pray for peace in
our country and in our world. Your Son says in today’s Gospel, “A
good man out of the treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil
man … brings forth evil. I choose goodness Lord. Let peace and goodness
begin with me. May I bring the spirit of goodness to work this day. I
ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

September 13 - Feast of St. John Chrysostom
Luke 7:1-10:
When Jesus had finished all his words to the people,
he entered Capernaum.
A centurion there had a slave who was ill and about to die,
and he was valuable to him.
When he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to him,
asking him to come and save the life of his slave.
They approached Jesus and strongly urged him to come, saying,
"He deserves to have you do this for him,
for he loves our nation and he built the synagogue for us."
And Jesus went with them,
but when he was only a short distance from the house,
the centurion sent friends to tell him,
"Lord, do not trouble yourself,
for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof.
Therefore, I did not consider myself worthy to come to you;
but say the word and let my servant be healed.
For I too am a person subject to authority,
with soldiers subject to me.
And I say to one, ‘Go,' and he goes;
and to another, ‘Come here,' and he comes;
and to my slave, ‘Do this,' and he does it."
When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him
and, turning, said to the crowd following him,
"I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith."
When the messengers returned to the house,
they found the slave in good health.
Dear Lord,
The Centurian, asked the Lord to help his servant. Help me to have that
same care for those who work with me. And, on this Feast of John Chrysostom,
bishop and defender of the poor, give me the spirit of charity as we serve
our clients today. I ask this in Jesus name. Amen.

September 14 - EXULTATION OF THE CROSS
John 3:13-17:
Jesus said to Nicodemus:
"No one has gone up to heaven
except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man.
And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert,
so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him might not perish
but might have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but that the world might be saved through him.
Almighty God,
As I ponder the cross on which hung your son for my salvation, help me
to realize that all my work today cannot compare to what has been achieved
by Jesus at Calvary. May your Son, by his glorious cross and resurrection,
fill me with greater faith, hope, and love today. I ask this through the
same Christ, my Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever. Amen

September 15 - Our Lady of Sorrows
John 19:25-27:
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother
and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
and Mary Magdalene.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved
he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son."
Then he said to the disciple,
"Behold, your mother."
And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
Father,
As the Beloved Disciple took Mary into his home, may I house the heart
of Mary who stood by our Lord at the cross. May I stand with Christ at
work and at home, today and always. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.

September 16
Luke 7:36-50:
A certain Pharisee invited Jesus to dine with him,
and he entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at table.
Now there was a sinful woman in the city
who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee.
Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment,
she stood behind him at his feet weeping
and began to bathe his feet with her tears.
Then she wiped them with her hair,
kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment.
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself,
"If this man were a prophet,
he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him,
that she is a sinner."
Jesus said to him in reply,
"Simon, I have something to say to you."
"Tell me, teacher," he said.
"Two people were in debt to a certain creditor;
one owed five hundred days' wages and the other owed fifty.
Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for both.
Which of them will love him more?"
Simon said in reply,
"The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven."
He said to him, "You have judged rightly."
Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon,
"Do you see this woman?
When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet,
but she has bathed them with her tears
and wiped them with her hair.
You did not give me a kiss,
but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered.
You did not anoint my head with oil,
but she anointed my feet with ointment.
So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven;
hence, she has shown great love.
But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little."
He said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
The others at table said to themselves,
"Who is this who even forgives sins?"
But he said to the woman,
"Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
Father,
As I begin this day, help me to be like the woman who cared for Jesus.
May I reach out to my fellow workers and clients and recognize my Lord
in them. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Luke 8:1-3:
Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another,
preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God.
Accompanying him were the Twelve
and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities,
Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza,
Susanna, and many others
who provided for them out of their resources.
Father,
Your Son preached glad tidings and your Kingdom in the various towns.
I pray that I may have the courage to share the Good News today at work
and at home. May my words and actions be a reflection of your Kingdom,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

September 18
Luke 8:4-15:
When a large crowd gathered, with people from one town after another
journeying to Jesus, he spoke in a parable.
"A sower went out to sow his seed.
And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path and was trampled,
and the birds of the sky ate it up.
Some seed fell on rocky ground, and when it grew,
it withered for lack of moisture.
Some seed fell among thorns,
and the thorns grew with it and choked it.
And some seed fell on good soil, and when it grew,
it produced fruit a hundredfold."
After saying this, he called out,
"Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear."
Then his disciples asked him
what the meaning of this parable might be.
He answered,
"Knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God
has been granted to you;
but to the rest, they are made known through parables
so that they may look but not see, and hear but not understand.
"This is the meaning of the parable.
The seed is the word of God.
Those on the path are the ones who have heard,
but the Devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts
that they may not believe and be saved.
Those on rocky ground are the ones who, when they hear,
receive the word with joy, but they have no root;
they believe only for a time and fall away in time of temptation.
As for the seed that fell among thorns,
they are the ones who have heard, but as they go along,
they are choked by the anxieties and riches and pleasures of life,
and they fail to produce mature fruit.
But as for the seed that fell on rich soil,
they are the ones who, when they have heard the word,
embrace it with a generous and good heart,
and bear fruit through perseverance."
Lord of the Harvest,
A seed of faith has been planted in me. As I begin this day, let my faith
in your Son grow. May it be firmly be rooted in me. May it bear fruit
today in my workplace and in my home. I ask this in Jesus name. Amen.

September 20 - Feast of Andrew
Kim Taegon, Martyr
Luke 8:16-18:
Jesus said to the crowd:
"No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel
or sets it under a bed;
rather, he places it on a lampstand
so that those who enter may see the light.
For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible,
and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light.
Take care, then, how you hear.
To anyone who has, more will be given,
and from the one who has not,
even what he seems to have will be taken away."
Father,
Saint Andrew Kim was a light for the nation of Korea. He and his companions
shared that light even to the point of death. May I have the courage to
share Christ our light in my words and actions today. I ask this in Jesus’
name. Amen.

September 21 - Feast of Saint Matthew
Matthew 9:9-13:
As Jesus passed by,
he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post.
He said to him, "Follow me."
And he got up and followed him.
While he was at table in his house,
many tax collectors and sinners came
and sat with Jesus and his disciples.
The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples,
"Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
He heard this and said,
"Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
Go and learn the meaning of the words,
I desire mercy, not sacrifice.
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners."
Father in Heaven,
As we celebrate the Feast of St. Matthew, the Tax Collector, may his prayers
help me to never place my work before Jesus who always says, “Follow
me.” This I ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

September 22
Luke 9:1-6:
Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority
over all demons and to cure diseases,
and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God
and to heal the sick.
He said to them, "Take nothing for the journey,
neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money,
and let no one take a second tunic.
Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there.
And as for those who do not welcome you,
when you leave that town,
shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them."
Then they set out and went from village to village
proclaiming the Good News and curing diseases everywhere.
Dear Lord,
As the Apostles were sent to proclaim the Good News and to heal, help
me to share your love in the workplace and to heal divisions between staff
and/or clients. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

September 23 - Feast of Saint Padre Pio
Luke 9:7-9:
Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening,
and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying,
"John has been raised from the dead";
others were saying, "Elijah has appeared";
still others, "One of the ancient prophets has arisen."
But Herod said, "John I beheaded.
Who then is this about whom I hear such things?"
And he kept trying to see him.
Dear Lord,
Herod sought to find Jesus to condemn him. Padre Pio sought out Jesus
to praise Him. Help me to seek out the Lord in my workplace this day.
May I continually praise and thank your Son, Jesus, who lives with you
and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.

September 24
Luke 9:18-22:
Once when Jesus was praying in solitude,
and the disciples were with him,
he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"
They said in reply, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah;
still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.'"
Then he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
Peter said in reply, "The Christ of God."
He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.
He said, "The Son of Man must suffer greatly
and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed and on the third day be raised."
Father,
Jesus told his disciples that he must suffer and die and then be raised.
I know that I must carry my cross each day. May the burdens of work be
lifted up in participation with the cross of Christ. I ask you this in
Jesus’ name. Amen.

Luke 9:43-45:
While they were all amazed at his every deed,
Jesus said to his disciples,
"Pay attention to what I am telling you.
The Son of Man is to be handed over to men."
But they did not understand this saying;
its meaning was hidden from them
so that they should not understand it,
and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
Father in Heaven,
The disciples of the Lord did not understand all that he said to them.
Help me to be attentive, with ears, open to the word of God today, Jesus
your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God,
forever and ever. Amen.

September 27 - Feast of St. Vincent de Paul
Luke 9:46-50:
An argument arose among the disciples
about which of them was the greatest.
Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child
and placed it by his side and said to them,
"Whoever receives this child in my name receives me,
and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.
For the one who is least among all of you
is the one who is the greatest."
Then John said in reply,
"Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name
and we tried to prevent him
because he does not follow in our company."
Jesus said to him,
"Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you."
Dear God,
Jesus says to us today, “He who is least among you will be the greatest.”
As we celebrate the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul, who served the “least”
in this world, Help me to do my part for charity. Help me to remember
the poor throughout this day. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

September 28
Luke 9:51-56:
When the days for Jesus to be taken up were fulfilled,
he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem,
and he sent messengers ahead of him.
On the way they entered a Samaritan village
to prepare for his reception there,
but they would not welcome him
because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem.
When the disciples James and John saw this they asked,
"Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven
to consume them?"
Jesus turned and rebuked them,
and they journeyed to another village.
Lord God,
The Gospel tells us that Jesus came not to condemn, but to save. Help
me to be grateful for the gift of salvation that your Son gave to me.
With a thankful heart, I praise you, through your Son, and with the Holy
Spirit. Amen.

September 29 - Saints Michael, Gabriel, and
Raphael
John 1:47-51:
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
"Here is a true child of Israel.
There is no duplicity in him."
Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."
Nathanael answered him,
"Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Do you believe
because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?
You will see greater things than this."
And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you,
you will see heaven opened
and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
Heavenly Father,
You are the creator of all that is seen and unseen.
You give us this Feast of the Archangels to celebrate your entire creation.
May I praise you, with all of the angels and saints, this day and always.
Amen.

September 30 - Feast of St. Jerome
Luke 10:1-12:
Jesus appointed seventy-two other disciples
whom he sent ahead of him in pairs
to every town and place he intended to visit.
He said to them,
"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.
Go on your way;
behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.
Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals;
and greet no one along the way.
Into whatever house you enter, first say,
‘Peace to this household.'
If a peaceful person lives there,
your peace will rest on him;
but if not, it will return to you.
Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you,
for the laborer deserves his payment.
Do not move about from one house to another.
Whatever town you enter and they welcome you,
eat what is set before you,
cure the sick in it and say to them,
‘The Kingdom of God is at hand for you.'
Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you,
go out into the streets and say,
‘The dust of your town that clings to our feet,
even that we shake off against you.'
Yet know this: the Kingdom of God is at hand.
I tell you,
it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day
than for that town."
Almighty God,
Jesus said, “The harvest is plenty but the laborers are few …
Therefore, pray for more laborers.” I dedicate this day of labor
for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. May
our Church be blessed with an increase in vocations to shepherd your people.
I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
