As you make plans for your wedding day in the church, please keep in mind that there are some acceptable practices. To avoid embarrassment, please see the priest or deacon performing your service before you make any plans. 1. As you choose your readings for the liturgy (service), they must be from Holy Scripture. You may go to the Readings page for a list of appropriate readings. 2. Not all music is acceptable during the liturgy. As a rule, the music selected must be liturgical. "I Got You Babe," from Sony and Cher, for example, is not liturgical. At. St. Rose of Lima, some contemporary music may be acceptable before the wedding begins (before the procession as people are being seated). You will need to consult with the music coordinator and/or the clergy person regarding the acceptability of your music selection. The musicians at St. Rose of Lima are all professionals and know which music is appropriate for a Catholic service. 3. Flowers for Sunday masses are arranged by our Altar guild every Friday. This means that flowers will already adorn the altar at the time of your wedding on Saturday. Therefore, it is not necessary for you to have additional arrangements. If, however, you would like to have your own flowers, here are a few guidelines: a) Flowers may not be placed on top of the altar. b) If you choose to have flower stands, they must be provided by the florist. c) Pew decorations may not be taped to the pews. You may hang them with string, wire, or other appropriate hanging material. d) All flowers must be removed after the wedding. e) Bird cages, arches, balloons, candelabras, aisle runners and items other than flowers are not permitted in the church at St. Rose of Lima. 4. If you choose to have a videographer and/or a photographer, please note: a) Photo sessions must be completed 20 minutes prior to the celebration. An additional photo session may take place after the ceremony for up to 30 minutes. b) Artificial lighting and flash is permitted only before and after the ceremony. c) Videopgraphers must use a tripod and remain in one place throughout the ceremony. d) Photographers and videographers must remain outside of the sanctuary and behind the communion rail throughout the ceremony. Exception: The photographer may take pictures in the aisle during the procession only. 5. Flower petals, birdseed, rice, or confetti may not be used during the service or at the entrance of the church. Flower girls are permitted to hand roses or petals to the guests as they process down the aisle. 6. The consumption of alcohol prior to the wedding is to be avoided. Couples should be sober in order to properly exchange their vows. This ruling is in accordance with both church and state laws. 7. Only dignified dress is acceptable for a church wedding. Avoid wearing anything that will draw attention away from the sacredness of your ceremony. 8. Additional questions or concerns should be brought to the attention of the deacon or priest prior to your service.
