Planning Your Wedding

Choosing readings for your wedding service should take time. You should select them as a couple. As you select them, read them carefully and pray over them. You are invited to meditate on the readings listed below:

Genesis 1:26-28, 31a
Man and woman were fashioned to be co-creators with God and good stewards of all God’s creatures.

Genesis 2:18-24
Woman and man were fashioned by God to be one body.

Song of Songs 2:8-10, 14, 16a; 8:6-7
Longing for a spouse is like longing for God who desires to have a covenant with us forever.

Sirach 26:1-4, 13-16
Many blessings are bestowed on spouses who respect and honor each other.

Jeremiah 31:31-32a, 33-34a
The covenant between man and wife is a mirror image of God’s covenant with us.

In the service, the psalm normally comes directly after the first reading. You should ask your cantor or musician for a psalm that they are comfortable singing. It is always best for the community to sing the psalms.

Psalm 33
Response: The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

Psalm 34
Response: Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

Psalm 103
Response: The Lord is kind and merciful.

Psalm 128
Response: Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

Psalm 145
Response: The Lord is compassionate toward all his works.

Psalm 148
Response: Let all praise the name of the Lord.

In God, like a loving spouse, we find comfort. God’s love is everlasting.

As Christ is the loving Spouse for the Church, husbands and wives must love and honor each other.

Philippianes 4:4-9
Rejoicing in the Lord always with prayers, petitions and thanksgiving will bring peace to a faithful marriage.

Colossians 3:12-17
Christ’s peace must control our hearts, the peace that makes us one.

Hebrews 13:1-4a, 5-6b
Let marriage be held in honor by all.

Let us love one another, because love is of God.
